Warao

Indian family of Warao in the pyramid.

Warao (Warrau) is an Indian tribe inhabited by humid equatorial forests of the Orinoco delta in northeastern Venezuela and eastern Guiana. In 1995, their numbers were about 25,000.

In the pre-Columbian period, Warao was a complex social organization based on the capitol. For centuries, they have relied on attempts at assimilation and forced displacement. They have maintained their own culture, religion and a strong sense of ethnic distinctiveness.

Today, Warao live in scattered villages where they build pile houses. They are worshipers of Shamanism. Their traditional activities include fishing and gathering and, to a lesser extent, copulation. Bibliography
