European Organization for Space Research

European Space Research Organization (ESRO) - a space and space research organization established in 1964-1975, established by eight Western European countries. In 1975 it was merged with the European Organization for the Development of Missile Ropes into the European Space Agency.

After the Second World War, European countries, like the US and the USSR, were interested in the achievements of the Third Reich in the field of rocket science. Researchers from Western European countries, however, realized that the national programs of each country alone would never be comparable to the programs of two world powers. In 1958, Edoardo Amaldi and Pierre Auger discussed the common Western European space agency. The debate was attended by representatives from eight countries.

It was decided to create two joint agencies. ESRO, which is responsible for space research and construction of scientific instruments and satellites, and ELDO, which was to build a common ESRO satellite launch vehicle. The ESRO Agreement was signed on June 14, 1962, and entered into force on March 20, 1964.

ESRO consisted of a number of centers focusing on different aspects of the organization's activities:

Currently, all these centers are part of the European Space Agency. Bibliography
