System of a Down is an American alternative metal band consisting of five studio albums and eleven singles.

The band formed in the early 1990s vocalist Serj Tankian and guitarist Daron Malakian. Shavo Odadjian, drummer and percussionist Ontronik Khachaturian, joined the group after suffering a hand injury and left the band after recording a third demo and John Dolmayan took his place. In 1998, the band released their debut album, System of a Down, which earned platinum status in the United States and a gold album in Canada. On September 4, 2001, their second studio album, Toxicity, was released. The band's first album debuted at # 1 on the Billboard 200 and Canadian Albums Chart. It also achieved triple platinum status in the United States and Australia, double platinum in Canada and gold in Germany, Switzerland and Great Britain.
