Personal data - legal term, which is defined in the Polish law in the Act of 29 August 1997 on the protection of personal data. Within the meaning of the Act, personal data are considered all information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person. An identifiable person is a person whose identity can be determined directly or indirectly, in particular by to an identification number or one or more specific factors determining his physical, physiological, mental, economic, cultural or social characteristics. Information is not considered to be identifiable if it would require excessive costs, time or activities.

The development of technology and the spread of the Internet have made processing of personal data relatively easy and fast. As a result, for many businesses, the use of personal data has become the basis of their business models.

The special category of personal data is sensitive data processed by a particular mode. There is a general ban on processing sensitive data except where permitted by law.

The Inspector General for Personal Data Protection is under the control and legal protection.

In May 2018 the EU Personal Data Protection Ordinance will replace the Polish Data Protection Act. Authoritative control (concept):
