Casamance (Wolof: Kaasamaas) is a region of Senegal, located south of the Gambia on the Casamance River. It covers the three administrative regions of the country: Ziguinchor, SĂ©dhiou and Kolda. The main town of the Casamance region is Ziguinchor. The area of the region is about 29 thousand. km², inhabits it about 800 thousand. flat.

The economy of the Casamance is largely based on agriculture, mainly the cultivation of rice. The region also has good conditions for the development of tourism (including beaches in the vicinity of Cap Skirring and Carabane), but the political situation makes it difficult to use these resources.

The dominant ethnic group in this region is Diola people. The relatively difficult economic situation in the region has led to the creation of the separatist Casamance Movement (MFF). In 1982, there was a first confrontation between the armed forces of Senegal and the local rebels. The suspension of arms agreed in 1991 and 2001 was later broken. The latest agreement of 30 December 2004 provides for the resignation of all armed activities by both sides, the opening of negotiations and the implementation of a regional reconstruction plan.
