Zofia Kodaska


Zofia Kodaskska (born 1798, died August 21, 1885 in Wieniaty near Wlodzimierz Wolynski) - participant of the November Uprising.

She came from the area of ​​the later Congress Kingdom. After the stormy passage (she left the country with her fiancé who later left her) she joined the Polish Army in men's disguise; She served under the name of Wańkowicz in the 8th Infantry Regiment, enjoying the good reputation of the superiors and performing the duties of Colonel Jan Skrzynecki. During the November Uprising, for bravery on the battlefield, she was promoted to a non-commissioned officer and decorated with the Cross of the Virtuti Militari Order. Her sex was finally recognized in the field hospital, where she got hurt in her leg; However, she managed to get staff and keep the truth secret.

After the fall of the uprising, she left the country again. She returned and settled in Volhynia, when the daughter of the Polish marriage she lived in was married. In the Volynian village Wieniatycze accompanied this woman, until the end of her life, remaining in the state of maiden. Bibliography
