Andrzej Badurski

Andrzej Badurski (born 1740, 17 March 1789) - Polish physician, professor of medicine, scientist and practice, pathologist, master of the Royal School.

He came from Cracow, where he returned in 1770 after completing his medical studies at the Bologna Academy (he received a doctorate). At the Cracow Jagiellonian University he conducted intensive research.

He reformed the medical department. He was the first professor at the Collegium Medicum of the Jagiellonian University and also the first professor of internal medicine.

The organizer of this school was based on the premise of a young Vienna school, but he was aware of its limitations, and so he also submitted his own postulates. Among others He designed the device of the Anatomy Department at that university (became the head of the cathedral), and also pointed out the necessity of establishing an anatomy and anatomical museum.

In 1776, he asked the National Education Commission to set up a hospital. He did it in 1780. It was the first clinical hospital in Krakow. This institution was named the Academic Hospital of Sts. Barbara (originally located in St. Barbara's Jesuit College), and Badurski became its director. It was the greatest undertaking in the life of a doctor. This facility gave medical students the opportunity to get acquainted with particular illnesses.
