Benjamin Affleck

Benjamin Franklin "Ben" Affleck (born March 1, 1869 - February 13, 1944) is an American businessman who was involved in the cement industry in Chicago. He was known as a man who at first had a hard life but became the president of the Universal Portland cement company.

He was born in Belleville, Illinois, where he attended public schools. He did not gain a significant higher education. As a young man, he worked for Harrison Machine Works for four years and then left for American Express. In 1890, at the age of 21, he joined the Alton Terre Haute Railroad, where he worked until 1896 when he was appointed to the Illinois Steel Company. He joined as a mechanic, but soon became a manager in the cement department thanks to his money management skills. In 1906 the Illinois Steel Company turned the department into an independent company. Affleck was the manager there until 1915 when he became its president.
