In the harvest

In the harvest - a painting by Aleksandra Mroczkowski from 1882, depicting the peasants gathering corn ears in the sheaf.

Until 1938, the canvas was in the collections of the Warsaw Zachęta Art Gallery. Probably during the German occupation, he was robbed and unknown to the USA, where in 2000, the garage sale was purchased by American painter Philip Willett. The picture was in poor condition and required extensive maintenance. At the center of the picture were two quadrilateral holes. It was signed by Mroczkowski. In 2007 Willett saw an inventory number on the stretcher showing that the painting came from public collections. The painter contacted the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Washington and established the original canvas. In 2008 Willett handed over the canvas to Poland. On April 28, 2008, the painting was taken to the National Museum in Warsaw. Bibliography
