During World War II she survived the concentration camp. She moved to Monaco where she avoided gambling and alcohol. Breakthrough was the meeting of film magnate Darryl F. Zanuck and his wife Virginia Fox, who paid her gambling debts and brought them to Hollywood. It was from her mentor's name that her movie nickname "Darvi" was derived.
