Denis Parsons Burkitt


Denis Parsons Burkitt (born 28 February 1911 in Enniskillen, died March 23, 1993 in Gloucester) is a British surgeon.

During World War II he began work in Africa where he continued to work until 1964. He is best known for describing for the first time B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and is found in children and adolescents in Equatorial Africa. This lymphoma is now known as Burkitt's lymphoma.

Based on his own observations he hypothesized that the increased amount of fiber in the African diet is responsible for their lower incidence of colorectal cancer. A 1979 book in which he described his views on this issue. Do not Forget Fiber in Your Diet has become a global bestseller. This hypothesis was not confirmed in the light of modern medical knowledge.
