Iron Gate

Iron Gate - water dam on the Danube

The Iron Gate (Porţile de Fier, Serbian Derekapova or Gvozdena Vrata) is a landmark section of the Danube valley that separates the Carpathians and the Eastern Mountains. It is the border between Romania and Serbia. Traditionally, the sailing through the Iron Gate hid rocky thresholds, blown up in the years 1890-1896. In this area there is a water dam with a lock and a hydroelectric plant.

As a consequence of the dam's development, more than 23,000 inhabitants have been displaced from their place of residence.
