Mazzal tow

A birthday cake with the mazzal tow sign in Israel

Mazzal tow (Hebrew: מַזָּל טוֹב) means "happiness" in Hebrew. This phrase was also introduced in Yiddish in the wording "maze tow" and is now commonly used in modern Hebrew, and even in English, and often means "congratulations."

The phrase is derived from the mishnaic mazzāl, meaning "constellation" or "destiny"; This, in turn, probably comes from the Akkadian manzalta or mazzaztum. In Israel, "mazzal tow" is used to celebrate every happy event, such as getting a driver's license, birthday or termination of service in the SOI.
