Jozef Korol


Józef Korol ("Starosta", "Hajducki", "Konig", born December 10, 1900 in Strzelce Opolskie) died on August 27, 1940 in Vistula Jawornik.) In the interwar period, a public administration employee Since the beginning of the German occupation, he has actively participated in conspiratorial work, establishing the Polish Insurgent Organization (POP), which has covered all of Upper Silesia.

In October 1939, at the command of the Command Area of ​​the Krakow Victory Service of Poland (SZP), he began to build SZP structures in Silesia. After the formation of the Union of Armed Struggle (ZWZ) he became the commander of the ZWZ of the Silesian District. In the summer of 1940, he was hiding in a hidden house in the villa "Lusia" in Wisła Jawornik. On 28 August 1940, a group of German police officers came to the villa to expropriate the owner and take over the building. Hiding in the building, Korol carried a mail with him, which was supposed to be picked up by the courier the day before. When the Nazis were banging on the door, he began to hurry up the papers. Unable to open, the gendarmes were already convinced that the building was unoccupied, but one of them noticed smoke rising from the chimney. At this sight, a whole group of gendarmes turned around. Korol, staying in a villa without insurance, opened fire to them and after a short battle he was killed. There is a commemorative plaque today.
