Otto VIII Wittelsbach

Otto VIII Wittelsbach (born 1180, March 7, 1209 in Oberndorf, near Regensburg) - Bavarian palatine.

Otto VIII was the son of Palatine of Bavaria Otto VII. His brother was Otto and Bavarian, the first Bavarian prince from the Wittelsbach dynasty. Otto VIII was first mentioned in 1193. He was an ally of King Philip Swabian, who promised his daughter Beatrice a wife. The marriage could not be concluded because the bride was underage. Probably in 1207, Filip Swabski changed his mind and planned to spend his daughter as a nephew of Pope Innocent III. Through King Otto, he was engaged to Gertrude's daughter, Henry the Bearded. Soon, however, the engagement was broken by the letter of Philip Swabski to Henry the Bearded, in which he warned of the explosive nature and cruelty of the future son-in-law. Otton swore to the monarch's vengeance, and on June 21, 1208, in Bamberg, he murdered Philip Swabski with a sword. The killers managed to run away. He was sentenced to banishment. Less than a year later, he was found in his barn in the village of Oberndorf on the Danube. He was challenged to the duel by the marshal of the kingdom, Henry von Kalden, who cut his head. The body of the killer was buried in the open field, and his head was thrown into the Danube. Literature Authoritative control (person):
