Fort Drum
Fort Drum is a US Army base in the northern part of New York, near Watertown. The 10th Mountain Division is stationed there. The base area is 434 km². According to the 2000 census, it had 12,122 inhabitants. The base is Wheeler-Sack Army Airfield.
The beginning of the base is a 1908 training camp called Pine Camp. Over the next few years it was gradually enlarged by land purchases. The army conducted summer maneuvers there. At the beginning of World War II it was greatly enlarged and transformed into a training base. In 1951, the name was changed to Camp Drum, and in 1974 to Fort Drum. In 1984 the new light division was re-established.
