The Ocean

"The Ocean" is a rock song from the U2 rock band, originating from her debut album Boy. It is still the shortest track in the band's career, lasting just over one and a half minutes. Adam Clayton's bass line is one of the most important elements of the song.

The text was inspired by Oscar Wilde's novel, Portrait of Dorian Gray, and the vacation he spent in Bono, being a child in Rush, Dublin.

The first live performance of the song took place at a concert in Plymouth, September 16, 1980. During the Boy Tour, "The Ocean" opened concerts forty-five times, most often from all the songs. The song was played twice in one concert, along with "I Will Follow" and "11 O'Clock Tick Tock." It was performed at the beginning and at the end of the performance. The band played the song for the last time on December 15, 1982, during a concert tour of the War Tour. Since then, "The Ocean" has not been played for over twenty-two years. This surprised the crowd when the band performed during the Vertigo Tour. Currently, the last recorded live performance was on December 9, 2005 in Buffalo.
