Young Italy

Young Italy (La Giovine Italia) - a radical movement founded in the spring of 1831 by Giuseppe Mazzini. He sought to unite the nation through the rise of the people and the vocation of the liberal republic.

In June 1831 Mazzini wrote the guidelines for the organization, and soon joined the groups from Genoa, Tuscany, Romania and Umbria. In 1833, the movement was already estimated at 60,000 members.

In order to promote the idea of the movement in the years 1832-1834 Mazzini published a magazine "Young Italy". He later decided to present his views in various writings.

There were two categories of members in the movement, with varying degrees of initiation.

In 1833, young Italy tried to bring about a revolt in Piedmont, which belonged to the Kingdom of Sardinia, but the conspiracy met with bloody repression, and Mazzini himself was forced to flee to Switzerland. In 1834 he founded the organization of Young Europe. Literature
