8th Infantry Division (USA)


The American 8th Infantry Division fought in the Second World War.

Formed for the first time in January 1918, she was sent to Europe in November 1918 but failed to take part in the First World War. It was dissolved in January 1919.

Formed again July 1, 1940, during the American military expansion on the eve of the United States' accession to World War II. July 4, 1944 was landed at Utah Beach in Normandy, then entered the line on July 7. In September she participated in the capture of Brest. In the autumn of 1944 she fought in the Battle of Hurtgen Forest and on the River Rur, which she forced on February 23, 1945. In March 1945 she reached the Rhine near Cologne. In April she participated in the encirclement of German forces in the Ruhr. In the last days of the war she crossed the Elbe and reached Schwerin.

After the end of the war, the division returned to the United States and was dissolved on November 20, 1945. Created again in 1950, it was stationed in Germany in 1956. In 1992, it was dissolved as part of the reduction of American troops after the end of the Cold War.
