Alfred George Knudson, Jr. (born August 9, 1922 in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, July 10, 2016) is an American physician, geneticist, inventor of the theory of the genetic basis of neoplasia, known as Knudson's (1971) hypothesis.
Knudson studied at the California Institute of Technology and received a Baccalaureate in Biochemistry and Physics in 1956. He then studied at Columbia University's New York School of Medicine, where he completed his research work, primarily in pediatric oncology. When he developed the basis of his theory of cancer, he worked in Houston. He was hired by Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia in 1976.
He received numerous honors and doctorate degrees; In 1998 he was awarded the Prize. Alberta Laskera. In addition, he is a recipient of the American Society for Pediatric Hematology / Oncology (ASPHO) Distinguished Career Award (1999) and the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Award for Lifetime Achievement in Cancer Research (2005).
