Harald Riipalu


Harald Riipalu (born February 13, 1912, died April 4, 1965 in Heckmondwike, United Kingdom) - Estonian military commander of the 1st Battalion 42th Volunteer Regiment of SS in the 3rd Estonian SS Brigade, then 1 battalion of the 45th Grenadier SS and 45 Grenadier Regiment SS "Estland" in the 20th Grenadier Division of the SS during World War II.

He studied law at the University of Tartu. In 1935 he graduated from military academy. He served in Narva, and in January 1940 he was transferred to the Regiment of Tartu Territory as a junior instructor. After the Soviet annexation by the Soviets he went to the XXII Red Army Corps. In the summer of 1941 he deserted and was sent to the German prisoner-of-war camp. From March 1942 he was the commander of the platoon and company in the 36th Battalion and since November the entire battalion. In May 1943 he moved to the newly formed 3 Estonian SS Brigade, which was then sent to the eastern front in the area of ​​Newel. He was the commander of the 1st Battalion 42th Volunteer SS Regiment in the Freiwilligen-Hauptsturmführer level. Since spring 1944 he served in the 20th Grenadier Division SS. He commanded 1 battalion of the 45th Grenadier SS SS in the Waffen-Sturmbannführer level and then the 45th Grenadier Regiment SS "Estland". For his heavy fighting under the Narva, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. On February 5, 1945 he founded in Berlin with the Waffen-Obersturmbannführer der SS Ain Ervin Mere Eesti Vabadusliit. During the fighting in Opole (Oppeln) area he was wounded. He was in a nearby field hospital and was then taken to occupied Denmark. There he surrendered in the first days of May to the British. In 1948 he left for Great Britain where he died on April 4, 1965.
