Dżolof

Djolof (Fr. Djolof, Wolof: Jolof) - a pre-colonial kingdom in present-day Senegal, founded by the Wolof people. Its capital was Linguère.

Little is known about the origins of the kingdom, but most probably it was founded in the 13th century and always maintained close trade relations with the Mali Empire or was dependent on it. The height of the rise of Józef is in the 16th century, when the kingdom was profitable trade with the Portuguese. There were six lands in the kingdom: Golof, Walo, Kajor, Baol, Sine and Salou. The next five lands were the fountains of Jolu. The power of the king was never strong, and often the uprising broke out. In 1488, the Prince of Wolof, baptized as João Bemoy, even addressed the King of Portugal John II for help in suppressing rebellion in one of his provinces. This help was given and the integrity of the kingdom was saved for several decades.

In 1549, however, Kajor's state disappeared, and Baol and Walo shortly after him. The independent kingdom survived until the conquest of the French at the end of the 19th century.
