Girl in red hat

Girl in red hat (metro rode hoed) - picture attributed to Jan Vermeer and dated to about 1664-1667. The work is signed, the signature is on the left.

The origin of the image is unclear. Perhaps he was bought from Vermeer by Pieter Claes van Ruijven and may have been part of the Jacob Dissius collection. He changed owners several times and has been in the National Gallery of Art in Washington since 1937. The red hat girl is one of two works from the National Gallery of Art in Washington, which has been attributed to Vermeer since the turn of the 19th century. The other one is a girl with a flute. These are the only works of this painter painted on board. Some scholars (including Blankert, Swillens, Gudlaugsson) have doubts about his attribution. Blankert considers the girl in the red hat for imitation later. Bibliography
