Orszada

Two jars and a bottle of homemade syrup syrup.

Orszada (oranges syrup, with fr. orgeat) - sweet cooling drink usually made of almonds, sugar and rose or orange flower water. It was originally made from a mixture of barley and almonds. It has a distinct, almond flavor and is a component of many cocktails, one of the more widely known is Mai Tai.

The word orszada comes from the Latin hordeata - "made of barley", the French orge is barley. The Spanish word horchata has a similar etymology. Contemporary drink has little in common with its protoplast. In Tunisia it is called rosette and is usually served chilled during weddings and engagement parties as a symbol of joy and purity due to its white color and fresh (slightly floral) flavor. It comes in many different varieties such as traditional almonds, bananas, mangos, pistachios and many more.

In Suriname, a drink called orgeade is made, which is similar to the syrup of sesame, and its only ingredients are sugar and almonds.

The Italian variety is a cucumber called oat, based on resin (styrax). It contains a small amount of bitter almond.

On the Greek island of Nisyros, a similar drink is known as the soumada.
