USS Growler (slup 1812)
The USS Growler was a pounder armed with 10 18-pounders and one 6-pounder. A ship of 112 tons was bought on Lake Champlain in 1812. He sailed under Lieutenant Sidney Smith as part of Squadron Commodore Thomas Macdonough until Royal Navy seizure near Ile aux Noix in Canada on June 3, 1813. "Growler" was incorporated into the British fleet as "Shannon" and later "Chub". The latter name was occupied by the American squadron during the Battle of Lake Champlain on September 11, 1814. It was not put into service and was sold to Whitehall in July 1815. Bibliography
