Diana z Gabii

Diana of Gabii - a sculpture of Artemis discovered in 1792 in the ruins of the city of Gabii, located between Rome and Praeneste. It is currently stored in the Louvre. In 1884 it was identified as a copy of the Praxiteles statue dedicated to the Sanctuary of Artemis at the Acropolis of Athens. This shrine was called Artemida Brauronia and was worshiped by pregnant women and obstetricians who offered deity clothing and other feminine trinkets. The statue was named Chitoniscos. The statue depicts a standing Artemis dressing one of her robes. The original was first mentioned in 346-345 p.n.e. Bibliography
