Michel Rolle
Michel Rolle (born April 21, 1652 in Ambert, died November 8, 1719 in Paris) is a French mathematician.
Since 1685 he was a member of the French Academy of Sciences in Paris. He was the first to propose the method of extracting the roots of algebraic equations (Rolle's theorem from 1691). At the beginning of the eighteenth century he officially criticized Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's differential calculus.
He also introduced a notation x n {\displaystyle {\sqrt[{n}]{x}}} for determining the n-degree root of z x {\displaystyle x} .
