USS Renshaw (1862)
USS Renshaw - a schooner in service during the Civil War. The first unit of the United States Navy bearing that name.
The new unit, not yet sintered, was occupied by a crew from Louisiana on the Tar River about 5 miles from Washington on May 20, 1862. Members of the expedition who took it without documents called it from the commander of their ship. Comdr. Richard T. Renshaw "R. T. Renshaw". He renamed it "Renshaw" to honor William B. Renshaw. She was accepted into the service as a hulk and formally purchased by the Navy from the Boston Prize Court on October 28, 1862.
He served in the North Atlantic Blockading Squadron for the remainder of the war and was sold to Norfolk on August 12, 1865. Bibliography
