Biomasa SSB

Spawning Stock Biomass, spawning stock biomass - a reproducible mass of a species of fish, or part of a population that is sexually mature. Its size determines the size of the first year herd in the next year. Biomass SSB is one of the basic indicators for determining the state of the wild game population and is intended to develop fisheries management plans for these fish, eg under the Common Fisheries Policy of the European Union.

Research institutes that monitor the biomass of fish stocks, also estimate the critical mass for the biosecurity of these stocks. If SSB biomass of a given stock reaches a size below the critical mass, the stock is considered to be overfished and endangered.
