Malatesta da Verucchio


Herb of the genus Malatesta Malatesta da Verucchio (born 1212, died 1312) is an Italian politician, nobleman and condotier, founder of the Malatesta ruling family in Rimini.

He was a connoisseur of the Gwelf family. Being the rim of Rimini, in 1239 he appointed the ruler (owner of signore) of the city, changing them into signoria. In 1295 he expelled all Gibelin families from Rimini.

Dante placed him in the Divine Comedy as Mastino vecchio (Info XVII, 46-48).
