USS Nahunta (1872)


USS Nahunta - a commercial sailing vessel rebuilt to a barge without power. Built as "West Point" in Aitken Mansel, Glasgow, Scotland in 1872. Purchased by US Navy from Luckenbach Steamship Co., Inc. from New York. Incorporated on August 8, 1917.

The barge was operating in the 5th Naval District until it was assigned to NOTS on August 8, 1917. Carriage of Norfolk "Nahunta" coal was in service of the US East Coast until August 15, 1919, when it was separated from NOTS. Served further service in Division 5 of the Marine District until the sale on October 2, 1919.

The ship was named after Nahunta, Georgia. Barka retained her old name after the sale. Bibliography
