Compensation (biology)
Compensation (Latin compensatio - balancing) - Substitution of function, taking over function of lost or diseased organ by another organ. For example, dark people have sharpened the other senses to compensate for lack of sight.
Compensation is governed by the laws of Anochin:
1. Every living organism has physiological mechanisms that allow for the replacement of the functions of different organs whose normal functioning is impaired.
2. Compensation reserves may only be activated if there is a disruption of the underlying physiological mechanisms responsible for the function.
3. Compensation procedures are started without will and regardless of which organ is damaged. This spontaneous process is generally not beneficial for retrieving a lost function and therefore requires control.
4. The return and re-education of lost functions is not a permanent process. Therefore, it requires constant stimulation through the use of favorably chosen physiological stimuli.
