Kyūjitai

Kyūjitai (舊 字体; "old form of writing") is a traditional form of kanji used in Japan before 1947. Simplified equivalent kyūjitai to shinjitai. Before adopting the kanji for Tōyō, kyūjitai was known as seiji (Japanese 正字, "correct marks") or seijitai. Although the Tōyō kanji became obsolete after printing, they were still in print in the 1950s due to the need to replace printing machines and adapt them to new characters. Kyūjitai continues to appear in some names (see jinmei).
