Mara Salvatrucha

Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) - a gang who was set up on the streets of Los Angeles by immigrants from El Salvador to defend against gangs of African-Americans and Mexicans. The sources of income are derived from typical sources such as drug trafficking, prostitution, rape, etc.

Initially, the gang created for Salvadoran defense was called "Mara Salvatrucha Stoners". "Mara" means "gang" in Spanish, "Salvatrucha" comes from a guerrilla organization fighting in El Salvador during the civil war, and "Stoners" simply meant that members did not deny alcohol and drugs. Soon the gang launched a drug war with the "18th Street Gang," owned by the all-powerful Mexican Mafia (controlling almost every Latino gang in California), resulting in nearly 1,000 deaths in two years. Mexican Mafia members (La Eme) convened a meeting in which Mara Salvatrucha Stoners was to receive south-east. Part of L.A., and at the same time abandon the nickname "Stoners", and assume "13", which was to show Mara Salvatruch's collaboration with the Mexican Mafia ("M" is the 13 letter of the alphabet), and so formed MS-13. However, several months after the MS-13 and 18th Street Gang had resumed killing in the streets.
