Thar (also known as Great Indian Desert) is a desert in western India and south-east Pakistan. Thar is mainly located in the Indian state of Rajasthan, although it extends also in the southern parts of Harawi and Punjab, as well as in the northern part of Hariana. In Pakistan, the desert covers the eastern part of the province of Sindh and the southeastern part of the Punjab province, where it is known as the Cholistan desert. Located on the lower part of the Indus Valley, covered by the Dekan Heights, in its left bank. It stretches from north-east to south-west, about 850 km long. Mostly covered with sandy plains with barns.
The Thar Desert area is 238,700 km².
