Basinet

Helmets: head (left) and basinet Basinet with a veil of the face

Basinet (bassinet) is a type of western European helmet, early Gothic head. Used since the 13th century, ie since the Middle Ages. He had a bell in the shape of a flat steel bowl with a flange attached to his neck. Basinet was widespread in the fourteenth century, then extended down to protect the face and neck. In that form he was put under a pot helmet. Over time, the basinet was equipped with a floating nose. During the further evolution in the second half of the 16th century it was expanded to a helmet with a face shield (closed helmet), initially on one frontal hinge, later on the two temporal ones, which made it an older helmet. At the beginning of the fifteenth century, reinforcement was added to the flange with plate elements, which over time replaced the pins. In this form he evolved into a much more modern armet, who replaced him in battlefields, next to the salads.

One of the most popular knights' helmets of the late 14th and early 15th centuries.
