Clock tower in Przemysl
Clock Tower in Przemysl - a tower in the center of Przemysl, at Władycze 3 street.
The tower was erected in 1775-1777 by the Athenian Szeptycki Catholic Bishop of Wrocław, as the bell tower of the future Greek catholic cathedral. The cathedral was to replace the earlier brick church from the 16th century, which was located at the current primary school No. 11.
After the First Partition of Poland, the construction of the cathedral began, and the investment promised to support the empress Maria Teresa Habsburg. It was only time to demolish the old church and build a magnificent late Baroque bell tower when the empress died, and the promises of the funds were left at the imperial court. This construction was never completed, and after the cassation of the Carmelite monastery in 1784 the Greek Catholic Church received the Carmelite Catholic church. St. Teresa for the cathedral council.
The 34 meter high tower, topped with a viewing gallery and equipped with a tower clock (hence the current name of the tower), over time became the guard tower used by the fire station as an observation post. In 1850 it was partially destroyed by a fire which consumed a Late Baroque helmet. Renovated in 1925, 1959-1960 and 1989-1990.
Since 1996, adapted to the Museum of Bells and Pipes, a branch of the National Museum of the Land of Przemysl.
An object registered in the register of monuments under number A-589 (06.06.1983). Bibliography
