Gerhard Rohlfs
Gerhard Rohlfs Gerhard Rohlfs (born 14 April 1831 in Bremen, died 2 June 1896 in Bad Godesberg) is a German traveler. For more than fifteen years he has traveled extensively in Africa and became the first European to reach many Black Land regions. Some researchers suspected that he was a spy and adventurer. In the years 1855-1860 he served in the French Foreign Legion and participated in the conquest of Algeria.
In the years 1861-1862 he studied the Western Sahara. In 1864, Tafilaltu entered the Tuat Oasis and from there traveled through Ghadamis to Tripoli. In the years 1865-1867 he made a trip from Tripoli through the Central Sahara to Bornu and further through the Jumeira plateau over Benue and to Lagos on the Gulf of Guinea. Between 1867-1868 and 1880 he traveled to Ethiopia. In the years 1884-1885 he was a German consul in Zanzibar.
