El Torito (standard CD-ROM)

El Torito is an extension to the ISO 9660 CD-ROM specification. It was designed to allow booting of the operating system of a computer from a CD-ROM. It was first publicly available in January 1995 as a joint project of IBM and Phoenix Technologies.

The modern BIOS searches the boot sector on the ISO 9660 CD. The EL Torito expansion allows the compact disc to emulate a hard disk or floppy disk, the disc may contain one or more disk images and emulate an INT 13 BIOS interrupt for each one.
