Alan Johnston (born Alan Graham Johnston, born May 17, 1962) is a British journalist working for the BBC. He was a correspondent of, among others. in Uzbekistan, Afghanistan and the Gaza Strip. During the period when he was the only Western journalist working permanently in the Gaza Strip, he was kidnapped by a little-known Palestinian terrorist group on March 12, 2007. July 4, 2007 handed over to representatives of Hamas and released after 114 days of captivity. His kidnappings led to numerous protests in the Palestinian territories, to solidarity with Johnston in many countries of the world, and the first meeting of British and Hamas officials. Upon release Johnston stated that he felt "tired but in good health" and that he thanked all those who sought his release. Authoritative control (person):
