In his youth Ghalibaf took part in the Iraqi-Iran War (1980-1988) and began his army career. At the age of 19 he was one of the commanders of the defense during the war with Iraq. At the age of 22 he was a commander of forces deployed in the Nasr area. He has also served as deputy commander of the Resistance Force and the Alliance for Mobilization of the Oppressed. In 1996 he was awarded the rank of Major General. In 1998 he was appointed commander of the Air Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard.

In 1996, Ghalibaf obtained a Masters degree in geopolitical sciences, and in 2001 he was awarded a PhD in geopolitics at the Tarjah Modares University in Tehran. Political career

After the student protests in Iran in July 1999, Ghalibaf was named by Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, the head of Iran's police forces. As head of police, Ghalibaf effectively restrained student protests in 2003 and ended without bloodshed. On April 5, 2005, he resigned his position to take part in the presidential election. His candidacy was accepted by Chamenei. In the June 2005 presidential election he won 13.89% of the vote. The mayor of Maharashtra, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, was victorious.

5 September 2005 Ghalibaf was elected by the 57th Mayor of Tehran, replacing Ahmadinejad. In 2008 he was a candidate for the "World Mayor" award.
