Rodrigo de Bastidas

Rodrigo de Bastidas (born 1468 - died July 28, 1527 in Havana) - Spanish traveler, conquistador, notary from Seville, researcher of the North American coast, governor. Rodrigo de Bastidas set out with Juan de la Cosa on two caravans for a trip to South America in the 1500s to explore the west coast of Lake Maracaibo. Earlier, in 1499, de la Cosa reached these areas together with another traveler Alonso de Hojeda. Vasco Núñez de Balboa, a late explorer of the Pacific Ocean, was on one caravan.

Rodrigo de Bastidas' expedition explored the coast of Colombia from Darién Bay and gained gold. On the way back, the caravans sank off the coast of Hispaniola (now Haiti). Bastidas rescued, but was imprisoned by Francisco de Bobadilla on charges of illegal cruise, which divided the fate of Christopher Columbus. Rodrigo de Bastidas was sent to Spain, where for 20 years he tried to clear the charges. After 20 years he was appointed governor of lands on the southern coast of the Caribbean Sea (between the bay of Maracaibo and Darién). Rodrigo de Bastidas was stabbed by his subordinate officer.
