USS Thomas (1894)

USS Thomas was launched as "Persia" in 1894. It was built for Hamburg America Line to be used for the line to New York. It was purchased by the Atlantic Transport Line in 1897 because it was "practically a sister unit" to other Massachusetts vessels already owned by this line. The new owners were renamed "Minnewska". The following year, he was one of six units requisitioned by the US government for transport during the American-Spanish War. The government was purchased for $ 660,000 on July 26, 1898. Renamed as "Thomas", the patroness of the ship was the hero of the Civil War (including the Chickamauga Battles) General George Henry Thomas.

The most famous cruise of the unit was the transfer of a group of 540 US teachers and their family members to the Philippines in August 1901 to begin a new era of public education. This group, along with other members of education (transported on other units) became known as the Thomasites, which was named after the USS "Thomas". The Peace Corps derives its tradition from these groups of teachers. Bibliography
