Alice Schwarzer was born as an illegitimate child and raised by her grandparents. According to family law in Germany at the time, the parental rights to a illegitimate child had to be attributed to a man, which in the case of Schwarzer took on her grandfather, Ernst Schwarzer. In one interview Schwarzer described him as a "very maternal grandfather". After being educated as a secretary, Alice Schwarzer moved to Paris in 1963 where she began her studies in a language study. Then, after returning to Germany, she worked as a journalist in the years 1963-1969 and then returned to Paris. Schwarzer came from an atheistic family.
