Lembitu
Lembitu (September 21, 1217) - Estonian starosta Sakali, leader of the Estates in the war with the Order of the Sword Armies in the early thirteenth century.
It was first mentioned in the chronicles in 1211 as the leader of the war expedition. At the beginning of 1212, when the prince of Novgorod Mścisław Udały besieged the castle of Varbola, Lembitu attacked Pskov, devastated the city, and its surroundings and with the spoils of war he returned to his abode. Further plague broke out in the war. After the destruction of the German invasion of Laane and the northern part of Sakala in 1215, German forces concentrated on the castle of Leole (now Lohavere), defended by Lembitu. On the third day of the siege, the Germans managed to set fire to the castle. The defenders were at the mercy of the winners. Lembitu and the other elders of Sakala were taken prisoner and released only after their sons were taken hostage. When in February 1217 Russian troops entered the German estates in Estonia, Lembitu entered into an alliance with them and began to gather volunteers coming to Sakala from the western and southern regions of Estonia, ravaged by the Germans. According to the Chronicle of Henryk Latvian, about 6,000 warriors await the arrival of allies from Rus.
Concerned by the Estonian war preparations, the German side decided not to join the forces of the enemy. Around 3,000 warriors were formed in the Sakala boundaries, formed in battle form with the Germans in the center, the Liars on the right and the Latgals on the left wing. The battle took place near the headquarters of Lembitu - Viljandi on 21 September 1217. Estom managed to force the Liwis to escape, but in the center of Germany they broke Lembitu's formation and encircled the right-wing Estonian wing that fought the Latgali. Lembit died, and his warriors escaped from the battlefield. The head of the Tuvalu Kaupo Tivoli was wounded. Bibliography
