rdesktop is a Terminal Services client that communicates via Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP). With this application, you can connect to the Windows XP operating system from the Linux desktop with the remote desktop service.

If Linux users want to have occasional access to Windows applications, it may be a good idea to install Terminal Services (Windows Terminal Services) on a Windows server. Linux users will be able to remotely connect to such a Terminal Services server, run virtual Windows sessions in a window on their desktops, and every remote user connected to the server will be able to run the necessary programs. As we see access to Terminal Services, Windows no longer requires Windows and Linux users running rdesktop can easily use this service.

Since rdesktop is a graphical application, it should be run on Linux or Unix running X Window System.

Make a connection

In its simplest form, the command used to connect to a system running Windows Terminal Services is: rdesktop host

where host is the name or IP address of the system running the Windows Terminal Services.

After the connection is established on the desktop of our Linux, a window showing the standard Windows login screen will appear. After logging in and specifying the domain to which we want to log (if necessary), the Rdesktop window will display the standard Windows desktop.

The most important features of rdesktop include bitmap buffering and encrypted connections.
