The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is an American federal agency with approximately 34,600 civilians and 650 military personnel. Its mission is to provide engineering services in the United States such as: History of the corps dates back to 1775, when the Continental Congress established the position of Chief Engineer, whose task was to build a fortification on Bunker Hill near Boston (now Charlestown, Massachusetts). The first divisions consisted mainly of French citizens employed by George Washington from the court of King Louis XVI. In 1802, the corps was stationed at West Point, where the first American military academy was established.
