Shōchiku


Shōchiku headquarters Shochiku Company, Limited (Japanese 松竹 株式会社, Shōchiku Kabushiki Gaisha) is a Japanese film studio that also produces kabuki theater productions and distributes anime films. Some of the directors associated with Shōchiku are Yasujirō Ozu, Kenji Mizoguchi, Keisuke Kinoshita and Yōji Yamada. Shōchiku also produced films by independent directors Takashi Miike, Takeshima Kitano, Akira Kurosawa and Taiwanese wave representative Hou Hsiao-Hsien.

Shōchiku was founded in 1895 as a production company for kabuki productions. The film was produced in 1921. It was the first to introduce Hollywood film production standards, including the star-promoting system. Shōchiku is the oldest continuously operating film studio in Japan.
