dissidents
dissenter, a traditional, out-of-date, definition of the faithful of these Protestant churches, which in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland were distinct from the Churches of England, and the Church of Scotland.
For the first time officially used this term (Protest Dissenters) in the Act of Toleration (1688). These were called Presbyterians, Congregationalists, Baptists, Quakers and Methodists. In the 18th century dissidents were also called British Catholics. From the middle of this century, the term "nonconformists" has started to refer to dissidents. Famous dissidents Bibliography
