Pedro de Medina


Pedro de Medina (born 1493, died 1567) - Spanish traveler and royal cartographer, creator of the first navigation book.

In 1544 he published the map of which he first placed the Amazon River previously discovered by Francisco de Orellana, which sailed into the ocean. The map also featured. Atlantic coast of America, along with the mouth of the Mississippi, the Labrador peninsula, Florida, Cuba, Panama and Brazil. The line of the Treaty of Tordesillas from 1494 was also marked on the map. In 1545 he wrote the navigation book Arte de naverar published in Valladolid and translated it into Flemish in 1580. The guide was served by Spanish and Portuguese sailors for another hundred years.
